We have a new book in the house! Whoop! Whoop! By now you probably already know that reading is an important part of growing up in this house and we like to share whimsical stories with our kids. The newest book, Isosceles’ Day, is certainly no different in that it’s just about as whimsical as it gets. BUT, and this is a big but, there’s another side to the story. One that gives the book a whole different meaning and the reader a completely different view.

When you first read it, Isosceles’ Day appears to be about a dog named Isosceles and a day in his life with his other furry friends. And while this is true, with all the fun and silly things they do, knowing the background to the story makes it so much more meaningful. It’s a book where there’s more than meets the eye.

What makes this book so whimsical and fun for my kids is the fun and silly things Isosceles does throughout the day. From waking up to dancing eggs (I wished my eggs did a little dance in the mornings), to singing with a moose, drinking from the hose with the help of a goose, playing in the water with a platypus, and lots more. Isosceles has quite the list of friends who make the simple things in life so much more fun.

But when you first read the story, what you don’t know is that Isosceles is a real dog who had an unfortunate start in life. He had been chained up in a backyard, likely abused for the first 3 years of his life with little to no human interaction, even during harsh and frigid winters. The same day Isosceles arrived at the shelter he was adopted by the author of this book, Kevin Meehan.

Meehan knew what it was like to grow up without much of a home, love, or sense of protection. And upon adopting Isosceles, for the first time the dog had a warm home and bed, and could explore the world without the restraints of chains and confinement. This new relationship was the inspiration behind Isosceles’ Day, as Meehan takes readers through a day in the new life of Isosceles.

At first glance, Isosceles’ Day is just about a dog and the silly things he and his furry friends do. But after learning the inspiration for the book, it’s hard not to think about Isosceles’ past and how the right person in his life has given him such a different and fun-loving life.

You may not know this, but we are dog owners. Our dogs weren’t adopted, but we learned many years ago that many times it’s the shelter dogs that need the most love. Just like people, you never know what animals have been through and can’t make a difference in their past, but you can certainly make a difference in their present and future.

You really can’t judge a book by it’s cover – or a dog – or a person.

Have you ever adopted a pet?
