How to Cook the Perfect Pot of Rice

Since college I have wanted a rice cooker. Why? Because I have to be the worst in the world at cooking rice. Every single time I’d cook rice, it would come out a big pot of mush. I thought it was impossible to get perfect, individual grain rice without a rice cooker. That is, until I discovered the secret to cooking the perfect pot of rice.

So what’s the secret? The directions on the package are a lie! A big lie! I have yet to follow the directions on any rice package and have the outcome I want. However, I have discovered the perfect rice cooking formula and since implementing it, there hasn’t been a pot of mushy rice in my house. And there’s no rice cooker needed!

What’s the lie rice packaging has been, and is still, telling us? Most packaging says to use 2 cups of water for every cup of rice. Wrong! This is why my rice used to come out so mushy. That’s just too much water. You only need 1 1/4 cups of water for every cup of rice you’re cooking. My favorite Jasmine rice indicates to use 1 1/2 cups of water, which is closer, but still not quite perfect.

How to Cook the Perfect Pot of Rice

Use this rice cooking formula on ANY type of rice and you’ll never have mushy rice again.

  1. Combine water and dry rice in a pot, over medium heat. (1 1/4 cups of water for every cup of rice)
  2. Cover and cook until it comes to a rolling boil. Then reduce the temperature to low.
  3. Once the water has completely reduced, turn the burner off, stir the rice, cover and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Letting it sit covered will allow the rice to steam itself done.
  4. Enjoy the perfect pot of rice!

*Note: It’s important that you stir the rice once the water has reduced. If you don’t stir, you will end up with uncooked grains along the top.
