Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show 2017

One of my fondest childhood memories around the holidays was visiting a drive through Christmas lights display. It was something I looked forward to every year, but after moving out of state there wasn’t anything like it around our new home. Now having a family of my own, it’s a tradition I thought would be great to share with my kids.

You may know that we moved to New Jersey just over a year ago and last year I was browsing online and discovered Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show. The stadium is over an hour away from our home, so we decided not to go last year. But this year, we got the opportunity to check it out. It may not be the same Christmas lights display I experienced as a child, but it is the perfect way to start this fun tradition with my kids, hour drive or not.

Every year Skylands Stadium, located in Augusta, NJ, puts on a Christmas Lights Show. It’s a 1 mile winding drive through light display, currently showcasing over 2 million lights. Simply drive up to the entrance of the light show, pay the admission ($20 per vehicle Fri.-Sun., $17 Mon.-Thurs.), and you get to drive through the entire lights display with your family.

Most evenings the Christmas Lights Show starts at 4:30pm (about the time the sun sets) and is open until 10 or 11 pm. We arrived at about 6 pm this past Sunday and there was a line to gain admission, but it didn’t take too long to get to the front of the line. As soon as we took care of admission, the lights show started right at the entrance.

The mile long light display is filled with holiday themed characters and trinkets, and fun light animations – Santa Claus, reindeer, snowmen, candy canes, the nativity scene, wreaths, Christmas trees, gifts, and more. My family’s favorite parts were the displays that we could actually drive under and if I had to choose their most favorite, it was the light tunnel at the end of the show. We were literally encapsulated with lights all around.

After finishing the Christmas Lights Show, we parked our car and wandered into the Christmas Village, which was filled with various vendors, holiday activities, and goodies. Before actually reaching the Christmas Village we got to walk through Bright Baum Light Forest and Advance Auto Parts Light Tunnel. Bright Baum Light Forest was stunning and lined with white trees lit with white lights. It was very beautiful and makes a great place for a photo opp.

Speaking of photo opps, there are plenty of them in the Christmas Village. Not only can you get your photo taken with Santa (fee required), but there other fun set ups to take photos – with a nutcracker, in a large nativity scene, with animated reindeer and a sleigh, or an 8 foot polar bear right outside the Christmas Village.

As if this wasn’t enough fun and excitement, right outside the Christmas Village you’ll also find an outdoor grill and fire pit for roasting s’mores, as well as the 20′ x 40′ Pompton Sport Center Skating Rink. I have never tried ice skating before and I’m not even a great roller skater, so when my son asked to ice skate I was skeptical. But we gave in and I’m glad we did because he had a blast.

Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show 2017 | #SkylandsStadium #ChristmasLights

At first he stayed around the outer skirt of the rink so he could hold onto the fence, but after gaining some confidence he found his way to the middle, enjoying every minute of it. Besides the lights show, I think ice skating is what he’ll remember most about our visit.

There’s still time this holiday season to check out the Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show. It’s open every night through December 30th, with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Christmas Village is only open through December 23rd.

Skylands Stadium Frozen in Ice

If you can’t make it to the Christmas Lights Show, the Frozen in Ice Wild West Ice Sculpture Extravaganza starts January 27th. It will be filled with over 100 tons of ice used for ice sculptures and more. Take a ride down the ice slide or try to find your way through life-sized ice maze. It’s sure to be more family-filled fun!

What is a childhood holiday tradition you share with your kids?

Identity Games for Even the Youngest Game Lovers

My kids enjoy sitting down to play games and can get pretty competitive (nobody likes to lose), but sometimes it can be a little difficult to find games that are well-suited for their ages and abilities. That’s what I love about Identity Games! They offer fun, and sometimes pretty quirky, games to suit all ages.

My kids are currently ages 5 and 2, so when it comes to games there’s only so much they can really understand. Obviously, strategy type games or those that have a ton of rules, just don’t work for them right now. But the games Find It and Elmo’s World Hide and Seek from Identity Games are perfect for their ages.

Identity Games for Even the Youngest Game Lovers | #IdentityGames #giftidea #HolidayGiftGuide

Find It is like a portable treasure hunt (yay for games that can be taken on the go!), where you have to find 40 items hidden inside a tube of colorful pellets. There’s no opening the tube during game play, so to find the objects you have to spin, twist, and shake the container, moving the pellets around and uncovering the hidden objects.

You may see an object one minute, but be looking for something else. And then you have to find the object you JUST saw, but from all the spinning, twisting, and shaking you just did to find the other one, the object has disappeared once again into the pellets.

Find It is a great game for my 5 year old, especially when I need a break from him running amuck throughout the house. I can give him the game and he’ll sit in one spot searching for the hidden objects.  And I already mentioned it’s great for on the go. Think road trips, waiting rooms, restaurants, etc.

Making the game even more fun are the different versions available.

  • Where’s Waldo?
  • Mythical Creatures
  • Discover America
  • Eww Gross!
  • Pirates
  • Sesame Street
  • Original
  • Kids
  • Glitz and Glamour
  • Wildlife (this is the one my son has)
  • At the Beach
  • Starry Night
  • Dinosaurs
  • Christmas Santa
  • Captain Underpants
  • Elf on the Shelf

And more!

Identity Games for Even the Youngest Game Lovers | #IdentityGames #giftidea #HolidayGiftGuideAs for my 2 year old, she has fallen in love with Elmo’s World Hide and Seek. Hide and seek was always a favorite game of mine as a kid, but if you can play it with Elmo, just imagine how much more fun it would be!

Identity Games for Even the Youngest Game Lovers | #IdentityGames #giftidea #HolidayGiftGuideOne of the older players (or a parent) hides the little Elmo character, and using clue cards the other players have 10 minutes to find Elmo. In addition to the hints on the clue cards, Elmo chirps out his own hints while hiding, making this game great for smaller kids like my daughter. She may not understand all of the clues, but she can listen for where Elmo is.

CARS 3 Cruises Home in Digital HD

Get your engines revved because “Cars 3” is cruising home in Digital HD, today (October 24th)! I’ve been a “Cars” fan since day one and the recent release of “Cars 3” is no exception. Even my kids have come to love Lightning McQueen and his crew.

Without giving the movie away, in case you haven’t seen it yet, my favorite thing is all of the new characters we get to meet. And yes, the classic characters make their big screen appearances too (it just wouldn’t be right without Mater). But it’s the new characters, like Cruz Ramirez, Jackson Storm, and Miss Fritter that make the movie so much more fun.

I will tell you that this time around, Lighting finds himself pushed out of racing by a new generation of faster and younger cars (oh, the joys of growing older), and goes on a journey to discover where he belongs in this new type of high-octane competition. You might be surprised at where he ends up, but I guarantee you certainly won’t be disappointed.

Digital HD Extras:

  • Miss Fritter’s Racing Skoool (Exclusive new mini-movie) – Enjoy blindsided testimonials from the Crazy 8’s, touting the transformative impact Miss Fritter’s Racing School has had in reshaping the direction of their lives.
  • Theatrical Short: “Lou” – When a toy-stealing bully ruins recess for a playground full of kids, only one thing stands in his way: the “Lost and Found” box.
  • Let’s. Get. Crazy. – Get schooled in the world of demolition derby, the “rules” of figure 8 racing, and how Pixar puts the crazy in the Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 race. This piece is hosted by Lea DeLaria.
  • Legendary – A close, historical look at the racing legends Wendell Scott and Louise Smith, whose tenacity and perseverance got them into the race even when they weren’t invited.
  • Ready for the Race – Disney Channel’s Olivia Rodrigo and NASCAR Racer William Byron check out the Hendrick Motorsports campus to showcase how real-world race training influenced the filmmakers.
  • World’s Fastest Billboard – Blink and you will miss all of the graphics and “car-ified” advertisements created by Pixar’s Art team to make the ”Cars 3” world as believable as possible.
  • Cruz Ramirez: The Yellow Car That Could – Join Cristela Alonzo and the filmmakers on their journey to create a race-car trainer turned champion racer.
  • Generations: The Story of “Cars 3” – For the story team, creating Lightning McQueen’s next chapter didn’t involve just a tune-up, but a complete overhaul.
  • My First Car – A collection of illustrated first-car stories as narrated by members of the “Cars 3” cast and crew. “A Green Car on the Red Carpet with Kerry Washington,” “Old Blue,” and “Still in the Family.”
  • 5 Deleted Scenes – Each deleted scene is set up with an introduction as to why it was removed from the film. Deleted scenes include “The Boogie Woogie,” “The Jars of Dirt,” “Lugnut,” “The Bolt,” and “More Than New Paint.”
  • Cars To Die(cast) For – Take a look at the phenomenon of die-cast toy collecting and the more than 1,000 unique designs that exist in the Cars universe.
  • Commentary – Brian Fee (Director), Kevin Reher (Producer), Andrea Warren (Co-Producer) and Jay Ward (Creative Director)
  • And more…

In the spirit of Halloween, check out these fun free “Cars 3” printables. The print and play pack includes a Trick or Treating Guide, two fun pumpkin carving stencils (Mater and Lightning), and a page of puzzles.

Kick Family Game Night Up a Notch with RoosterFin Games

Do you hold a family game night in your house? With the way my entire family is glued to electronics, family game night is a great way to reconnect with each other and just enjoy each others company over some friendly (and intense) competition. We recently kicked our family game night up a notch with some new game additions from RoosterFin Games.

Of course classic games are always a hit during our family game nights, but it’s also fun to try out some new games. The newest additions to our game collection include Bouncing Bots and Lumpy Cubes Hero Edition from RoosterFin Games.

Kick Family Game Night Up a Notch with RoosterFin Games | #RoosterFinGames #familygamenight #HolidayGiftGuide

We first tried out Bouncing Bots and while it’s a simple concept, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Each player gets two bots of the same color and taking turns, you try to bounce your bots onto number values on the scoring boards. The player with the highest score, wins.

Kick Family Game Night Up a Notch with RoosterFin Games | #RoosterFinGames #familygamenight #HolidayGiftGuide

Sounds easy, right? Not so much. I have been having a hard time perfecting the bot bounce, so my bots either bounce off the board or don’t even make it near the board at all. If this is a problem for everyone, you can flip the scoring boards over so they’re more of a bowl shape, making it easier to get the bots to stay on the board. My son on the other hand has been practicing and he’s become our resident professional at Bouncing Bots.

Kick Family Game Night Up a Notch with RoosterFin Games | #RoosterFinGames #familygamenight #HolidayGiftGuide

Kick Family Game Night Up a Notch with RoosterFin Games | #RoosterFinGames #familygamenight #HolidayGiftGuideAfter I got tired of losing at Bouncing Bots, we moved on to Lumpy Cubes Hero Edition. This game is more about testing your memory, reaction time, and motor skills.

Each player gets four lumpy cubes of the same color. Everyone has 10 seconds to memorize the stack pattern on the card and then they have to stack their lumpy cubes to match the card. Whoever does it correctly the fastest yells “Lumpy” and gets the card. The player to collect three cards first, wins.

Lumpy Cubes Hero Edition is my favorite of our two new games. Again, it has a simple concept, but what makes this game challenging, aside from a good memory, is that there are four different faces on the cubes. Each cube as one of the four faces on the front and a different one on the back.

There have been many times I’ve gotten three cubes stacked and when I get to the top I don’t have the face I need to finish it. I then have to find where that face is on the back of the cubes I’ve already stacked and figure out how to adjust the cubes to meet the pattern on the card. It can get pretty tricky.

What types of games does your family like to play? Both of these from RoosterFin Games are great options for the whole family. They’re both curated for ages 6+, have simple concepts, but are challenging at the same time. And another perk is that they don’t have a ton of pieces that can get lost.

Disney’s Newest Ghoul on the Block Hits DVD Today #Vampirina

Do you have a Disney Jr. fan on your hands? If so, then you’ve probably met the new girl (or ghoul) in town, Vampirina. My kids were awaiting Vampirina’s arrival well before her family hit the block and now that she’s here, they couldn’t be more happy. At least I didn’t think they could. Just in time for Halloween, Vampirina is being released on DVD today! Now my kids can have all the fangtastic fun they want.

Vampirina just made it into town on October 1st, when her family moved from Transylvania to Pennsylvania. For obvious reasons, they’re kind of the odds ones out in the neighborhood. Vampirina tries her best to adapt to her new school and making human friends, and along the way learns to appreciate how unique she is.

As of today (October 17th), we can all follow Vampirina on her new adventures in Pennsylvania because she’s now available on DVD. Get ready for music videos, party planning, sleepovers, and a little battiness now and then.

Here’s a sneak peek, if you haven’t had the chance to check out Vampirina yet.

Danone Nations Cup World Final 2017

This weekend I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Danone Nations Cup World Final at Red Bull Arena. I cannot express how great of a program this is for kids ages 10-12 and encourage you to attend the event if you ever get the chance. It was a three day event, where kids from 32 different countries worked their butts off, and the results are finally in!

Danone Nations Cup World Final 2017 | #DNC2017 #BelieveInYourDreams #soccer

~I received complimentary tickets to attend the DNC 2017 to help facilitate this post. As always, opinions are still 100% my own.~

First off, these kids may be young, but their talent is beyond measure. I never knew kids could be so talented. I mean every single game was entertaining. The kids had hustle, heart, true skill in the game of soccer, and they really pushed themselves. There’s no doubt in my mind I was watching at least a few future professional soccer players.

And I won’t make you wait until the end of this post to find out who the winners were. Mexico took the trophy for the boys division and Brazil took the trophy for the girls division. Congrats to those teams! (Just check out some of these official photos to see how hard these kids were playing.)

What really blew me away was that every team, no matter what ranking they were working to place, played their hearts out. If you knew you weren’t going to come in first, would you still give it your all? These teams did! All of the kids had true dedication to their countries and teammates, and the games were very inspiring to watch throughout the day.

But the DNC World Final wasn’t just a day of soccer games. We got to spend have some fun at the Activity Village right outside the arena. Every Danone brand was present with freebies, coupons, prizes, and games.

There were quite a few things the kids could do to enjoy the day, like a virtual reality penalty kick, the Danimals Ninja Challenge (obstacle course), photo opp with Spiderman, music, dancing, hula hoops, face painting, and there was even a dairy station to meet a real cow and also practice milking a cow (no, the kids didn’t practice on a real cow, but it looked pretty cool).

On top of that I got to attend the DNC press conference where the CEO of Danone, Emmanuel Faber, and the DNC US Ambassador, Abby Wambach, talked about what the DNC means to them and what they hope children will take from the experience.

Danone Nations Cup World Final 2017 | #DNC2017 #BelieveInYourDreams #soccer
These kid reports from different countries got the chance to ask some questions.

Faber reiterated that the DNC is all about courage, believing in your dream, working hard to achieve that dream, excelling, be your best self, teamwork, fairness, and more. These are all characteristics he hopes the kids who participate in the tournament learn and continue to practice in their lives.

Danone Nations Cup World Final 2017 | #DNC2017 #BelieveInYourDreams #soccer

From Wambach, it’s easy to get inspired. She spoke about how as a kid she played in different nations, which gave her the opportunity to believe in bigger dreams and realize there’s something bigger than just her. There are different people in different countries with the same dream. Soccer is a universal language, so while we may not be able to communicate verbally, the game of soccer is no different.

This is something the kids who are participating in the DNC are starting to realize. Thirty two countries come together to play a single sport, and while they speak different languages and may not be able to communicate well, it’s completely different on the field.

One of the things that really hit home was when Wambach mentioned that “kids need to know how to fail.” My son hates losing. It’s win or lose, and he always wants to win. But failure is a part of life and gives us an opportunity to practice and come back stronger. If there’s no failure, there’s no room for improvement and I hope that my son will always find room for improvement, as should all of us, and especially our kids. Wambach didn’t always win and wasn’t always at the top, but those failures helped her to come back better than before.

Danone Nations Cup World Final 2017 | #DNC2017 #BelieveInYourDreams #soccer

Between all of the games, the activities and the press conference, it was a jammed packed day of family fun. I can only hope they’ll plan to host it in the US again in the future, so we can go back for a second time. Who knows? Maybe the next time the US hosts, my son will be playing.

Do you have a child who’d like to participate in next year’s Danone Nations Cup?

I do everything in my power to teach my kids good manners and what behaviors are acceptable, but when we sat down to watch The Little Wolf’s Book of Badness from NCircle Entertainment, we learned that this is the exact opposite of what Little Wolf’s family expects of him. His family is disappointed at Little Wolf brushing his teeth, going to bed early, and saying excuse me. I’d be amazed if I could get my kids to do this without being nagged and reminded over and over.

To set him straight his parents decide it’s time to ship Little Wolf off to Uncle Big Bad’s school, Cunning College, to be taught “better.” Upon arriving at Cunning College, Little Wolf learns the nine rules of badness, but does he abide by those or continue to be himself?
