I am a total sucker for cute picture frames. I even have new ones that’ve never been used just stored away, waiting for the perfect photo. During our move a few months ago, one of the frames I’ve been using for years somehow got broken; to a point that I couldn’t fix it in a way that wouldn’t be noticeable.

I let it hang on the wall anyways, broken corner and all, holding a photo of my boyfriend and I. Then a few weeks ago I decided it was time to decorate the walls in my kids’ room. I had some beautiful canvas prints to use, but needed something more to make the photo displays complete. So I thought, why not add a few other photos around the canvas?

I first went through my stash of new picture frames, but didn’t find what I was looking for. Then a light bulb went off and I knew exactly what I needed to do. I turned that broken picture frame into an adorable keepsake frame for my daughter and now instead of a photo of me and my boyfriend, it preciously holds a photo of my rambunctious daughter.

Here’s what I did!

Step 1: Disassemble and clean.

The first thing I had to do was take the picture frame apart and clean it really well. This particular frame had two glass pieces because of the featured wording designs. The glass piece that goes in the back had something sticky on it (probably to hold a photo in place) and I had to get that off. I simply used a little elbow grease and Goo Gone to handle that.

Step 2: Paint the glass.

I wanted to add a little girliness to the frame since it was going to be for my daughter, so I took the back glass piece and painted the back of it pink. I didn’t have any pink paint, so I just mixed equal parts red and white paint together to get the perfect pink shade. After two coats of paint and letting it dry, I absolutely loved how this glass piece looked. It still had the white featured wording from its original design, inspiring to live, laugh and love.

Step 3: Remove wording from glass.

The front glass piece had black wording on it, again to the effects of live, laugh, love and it worked great for the original design of the frame. But for the revamped keepsake frame, I needed this glass piece to be completely transparent. So I took the blade from a box cuter and in a matter of seconds had easily scraped off the wording. Then I just cleaned the glass to make sure I’d gotten it all off.

Step 4: Reassemble and fix corner.

The next step was to reassemble the picture frame and fix the broken corner. Rather than using tape or glue, I made it super simple and just wrapped one of my daughter’s headbands around the right side of the frame. The headband holds the broken corner together and offers a keepsake feature. The cute pink rose headband is actually one my daughter wore as an infant and as she’s grown, has become too tight for her plump little head. I have to admit, I felt like a genius when I thought of this!

Step 5: Add photo and display.

The only thing left to do at this point was to choose the perfect photo for the frame and display it on the wall.
